Peace Out CIC
Carnegie Dunfermline Trust Supports Peace Out CIC to Open Up Empowering Conversations About Death and Dying
The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust is pleased to award £800 of funding to Peace Out CIC to deliver two free community workshops in Dunfermline focused on empowering conversations around death, dying and sustainable end‑of‑life choices.
Peace Out CIC is a social enterprise tackling one of society’s most hidden and least discussed issues: the cost and environmental impact of dying. Their work combines compassion, education and creativity to help communities talk openly about death -something that many people find difficult, but which affects every one of us.
Why These Workshops Matter
Across the UK, more and more people are facing challenges linked to bereavement, funeral costs and a lack of information about sustainable options. Peace Out CIC aims to shine a light on these issues by making conversations about death accessible, supportive and free from taboo.
1. Tackling Lack of Preparedness
Talking about death is still considered uncomfortable, which means many families are left making difficult and costly decisions during moments of deep grief.
Fewer than 40% of adults have discussed their funeral wishes, leading to confusion and stress for loved ones.
Peace Out CIC helps break down that barrier by creating safe, informal spaces for planning and open conversation.
2. Reducing Environmental Impact
Traditional funerals and cremations often carry a significant carbon footprint and use materials that are harmful to the environment.
Eco‑friendly options do exist - natural burials, biodegradable coffins, low‑carbon alternatives - but many people simply don’t know about them. The workshops introduce participants to practical, sustainable choices that honour both people and the planet.
3. Addressing Funeral Poverty
The average UK funeral now costs over £4,000, leaving 1 in 8 families in debt after a bereavement.
Peace Out CIC provides clear, accessible advice on:
low‑cost funeral planning
DIY or family‑led funerals
ways to approach end‑of‑life arrangements with dignity and without financial strain
Creative, Compassionate Community Learning
Peace Out CIC uses creative methods—art, storytelling, humour, and gentle conversation—to make a difficult topic easier to approach. Their workshops give people the tools to plan ahead, understand their options, and feel more confident talking about end‑of‑life wishes.
With the support of the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, they will deliver two free workshops in Dunfermline:
One in the city centre
One in a community venue outside the centre
Venues will be confirmed shortly, and each session is designed to support around 40 participants, including older adults and people on low incomes.
A Shared Mission for a More Informed, Compassionate Community
By supporting Peace Out CIC, we are helping ensure that everyone - regardless of income - can access information that leads to a dignified, sustainable and affordable farewell. Their mission aligns strongly with our commitment to community wellbeing, equality of access and lifelong learning.
We are proud to help bring these important conversations into the heart of Dunfermline and look forward to seeing the positive impact these workshops will have for local individuals and families.
