Schools We Support

‘The Trust gives grants for projects and activities with social, community, educational, cultural, sport and recreational purposes which benefit people in our local area.

Andrew Carnegie left a legacy for his home town of Dunfermline.  In his founding letter, he instructed Trustees to:

‘Bring into the monotonous lives of the toiling masses of Dunfermline more sweetness and light: to give them - especially the young - some charm, some happiness, some elevating conditions of life which residence elsewhere would have denied; that the child of my native town, looking back in after years, however far from home it may have roamed, will feel that simply by virtue of being such, life has been made happier and better.’

The Trust provides a programme of grant-giving for Dunfermline and its environs. Our main geographical area covers Dunfermline (including Wellwood, Townhill and Halbeath and Rosyth).

Guidelines For Schools

The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust is an endowment trust which was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1903 to add value to the lives and environment of the community of Dunfermline, where he was born and passed his childhood. The geographic area of the Trust is defined as 'Dunfermline and its environs'.

The Trust supports local primary and high schools with grants between £300 and £10000 for projects, activities and schemes. Additionally, our Special Activities Fund can assist where families have difficulties in meeting the cost of school trips and the pupil receives free school meals. Further guidelines have been issued to local schools as these requests must be made by the head teacher or depute head.

The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust may be supportive of local primary and high school projects which:

• Have a lasting impact e.g. playground equipment which can be used over many years.
• Show value for money in terms of cost per head against benefit gained.
• Are additional to the curriculum e.g. environmental projects, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, school productions etc. Costs which are the responsibility of Fife Council will not be covered. In respect of national programmes e.g.Columba 1400 or Ocean Youth Trust etc, schools can apply on one occasion only - either to try it within the school for the first time or for a second year to buy time to secure another funding stream e.g. sponsorship. The amount which can be applied for is limited to £500 per pupil and subject to a maximum of £5000 per school.
• Encourage inclusion of children with disability or special educational needs or pupils who would otherwise not be able to participate for financial reasons.
• Promote citizenship, at both local and global levels.
• Offer an exceptional opportunity for a group of pupils e.g. once in a lifetime trip to represent their school at a sporting or cultural event.
• Are themselves supported by the schools own fundraising efforts through whole of school events or via PTA/Parent Councils.

In order to determine the level of assistance given and assess priority, the Trustees will also take into account:

• Previous grants awarded by CDT - amount and purpose.
• Amount raised through own fundraising.
• Approaches to other funders for assistance with the project.
• Partnerships with other schools, organisations or local authority.
• SIMD deprivation index for school catchment area.
• Whether, where appropriate, the project is sustainable i.e. is able to continue beyond the term of the funding.

All applications should come directly from the headteacher and not from the PTA or Parent Council.

Only one grant application per school will be considered at any one time.

The Trust will not fund retrospectively and will not provide annual recurrent funding or requests for sponsorship or general appeals.
