Boosting Team Spirit at St Columba’s: New Basketball Kit Transforms Participation and Pride
St Columba’s RC High School has given its senior basketball team a major boost thanks to a £500 grant from the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust. The funding allowed the school to replace an outdated and heavy kit with a brand‑new, modern set - meeting the needs of a growing and increasingly ambitious team.
The project was spearheaded by one of the school’s Active Schools Platinum Ambassadors, who took the lead in coordinating the full process. Working closely with school staff, Active Schools and a local sportswear supplier, the pupil leader helped design and order a refreshed kit that reflects the team’s identity and competitive aspirations.
The new kit is already making a visible impact. Players wear it regularly at training sessions and competitions and staff report a noticeable lift in team spirit, pride and motivation. With more pupils now choosing to take part, the improved sense of belonging has had positive effects on health, wellbeing and confidence. Importantly, the updated kit has also helped remove financial barriers, ensuring all players can participate fully without personal cost.
On the court, the senior team continues to compete at a high level within the Fife Schools network, strengthened by a cohesive team identity and rising enthusiasm across year groups. The project’s success has also inspired younger student leaders, who are now exploring additional funding opportunities to extend basketball kit provision throughout S1–S6.
With no challenges reported during delivery, the school is keen to build on this momentum. Their goal is clear: create a sustainable, inclusive and thriving basketball pathway for every young person who wants to play.
