Historic Dunfermline Through the Eyes of Children
A visit to the Community Gallery at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries offered a wonderful opportunity to see local history brought to life through the creativity and imagination of young people.
Recently, our grant officer Janine, had the pleasure of visiting the Historic Dunfermline Through the Eyes of Children exhibition by the City of Dunfermline Heritage Group, currently on display in the Community Gallery. The exhibition showcases artwork created by local children who have explored Dunfermline's rich heritage and reinterpreted it through their own unique perspectives.
The display is a vibrant celebration of the city's history, featuring colourful artworks inspired by some of Dunfermline's most iconic buildings, landmarks and historical stories. Through drawings, paintings and mixed-media pieces, the young artists have captured not only the physical character of the city but also the sense of pride and connection that local heritage can inspire.
We were particularly pleased to see so many wonderful portraits of Andrew Carnegie throughout the exhibition. It was clear that the children had enjoyed learning about Dunfermline's most famous son and their artwork reflected both creativity and curiosity in exploring his life and legacy. Each portrait offered a unique interpretation, demonstrating how Andrew Carnegie's story continues to inspire new generations.
What makes the exhibition particularly special is the way it encourages children to engage with their surroundings and discover more about the place they call home. By learning about Dunfermline's past, these young people have developed a deeper understanding of the city's heritage while expressing their creativity and artistic talents.
The project highlights the important role that heritage organisations play in helping to make local history accessible and relevant for future generations. It also demonstrates how creative activities can bring communities together, encouraging learning, curiosity and civic pride.
The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust was delighted to support the City of Dunfermline Heritage Group with a grant of £493 towards the project, helping to create opportunities for young people to connect with Dunfermline's remarkable history in meaningful and engaging ways.
Visitors to the Community Gallery will find an exhibition full of imagination, enthusiasm and talent. The artwork serves as a reminder that although Dunfermline's history stretches back centuries, its future is being shaped by the young people who are learning about and celebrating that heritage today.
